Council

The Lockhart Shire and its townships are surrounded by history and the true country spirit. Lockhart Shire is the centre of farming excellence.  Fertile soils led to agriculture flourishing, firstly as a grazing district and with the advent of cropping, became a prosperous mixed farming area. Today, its proud history is reflected in the agricultural initiatives and excellence for which the Lockhart District has become renowned.

The Shire's agriculture continues to produce quality grain, prime lamb and beef, with the wool industry still an integral part of its agricultural diversity.

The development of rail infrastructure in the early 1900's generated employment and the growth of the townships. Agricultural-based industries and businesses flourished with the growth in population.

Welcome from the General Manager

Welcome to the Lockhart Shire Council website.  I trust that you will find the website both interesting and informative with an array of information not only for our shire residents but also the many visitors that travel through our region as well as potential businesses considering investing or establishing in the area.

Lockhart Shire Council is located in the Eastern Riverina of NSW.  Only a half day drive from Sydney & Melbourne.  It is ideally situated between the city of Wagga Wagga and the cities of Albury & Wodonga.

There are a number of eating places within the Shire as well as the opportunity for some shopping from antiques to clothing, gift-ware & accessory boutiques.  Tourist attractions such as The Rock Nature Reserve (the best-known landmark in the Riverina), Galore Hill where you can explore the caves that were used by Bushranger, Daniel "Mad Dog" Morgan and award winning boutique wineries makes you appreciate the diversity and the abundance of history that fills our region.

Lockhart Shire has a wide variety of different cultural activities including the unique Doris Golder Gallery of Layered, Fleece Wool Art, Noske's Chinese Crossing and the renowned events such as the Spirit of the Land Festival and the Lockhart Picnic Races that draws crowds in the vicinity of 3,000 to 5,000.

The number of facilities within our shire is an added bonus with services such as a community health centre and hospital, two medical centres and two aged care facilities.  There are private & central schools from kindergarten to year 12 as well as recreational and sporting opportunities for AFL football, netball, swimming, tennis, squash, lawn bowls and golf enthusiasts just to name a few.

There is also opportunity for business and residential growth within the Shire.  Land is for sale at Lockhart's Industrial Park and following an amendment to the Lockhart Local Environmental Plan 2012, an industrial area at The Rock has been created to allow for potential future growth. The newly zoned land is directly adjacent to the Olympic Highway, a major route between the larger regional centres of Albury-Wodonga and Wagga Wagga, while also providing an essential connection from Victoria to the vast Riverina and Central NSW.

New subdivisions of residential land have also been released at Lockhart, The Rock and Yerong Creek.

More information regarding available industrial and residential land can be found at http://www.lockhart.nsw.gov.au/development/land-for-sale.aspx

We welcome you to Lockhart Shire where you can enjoy the array of majestic wonders and the complete serenity that our region has to offer.  We are community-orientated with enthusiasm that just keeps evolving.
