Graincorp - GM Canola
Council received a letter from the Corporate Affairs Manager of Graincorp advising that Graincorp will be playing a role in the limited commercial release of GM canola for the 2008/09 cropping season. The release will be limited to approximately 150 growers in NSW and Victoria and production is estimated to be 15,000 tonnes. Production is managed through a number of agreements between growers, seed providers and the GM technology owner.Graincorp will be providing receival, storage and handling facilities for GM canola at their Lockhart site and this will be a dedicated grain path for GM canola to ensure comingling with other grains does not occur.GM canola will not enter the open market and as all production is contracted to Cargill Australia and Riverland Oilseeds.Graincorp advised that it is confident it will meet all standards and protocols that relate to the management of GM canola and that it will contribute positively to a successful introduction of this new technology.
