Advice For Prospective Applicants

The information contained hereunder has been prepared to assist you with your application and contains information that will directly influence Council's determination on any application you may submit.

Thank you for your interest in this vacancy. Lockhart Shire Council aims to recruit the best possible staff to ensure the delivery of the highest level of service to its customers. Lockhart Shire Council aims to ensure that its recruiting process will be fair and equitable to all applicants for a position.

ELIGIBILITY

The Selection Criteria contained in the position description details the skills, qualifications and experience required for you to be able to do the job. Please examine the position description carefully to assess your eligibility for the position. If you decide to lodge an application for this position, it is important that all the appropriate selection criteria are addressed to ensure that a fair and equitable assessment can be made of your application. Failure to do this will place you at a distinct disadvantage.

PREPARING YOUR APPLICATION

Your application should include the following:

1. A covering letter stating why you are applying for the position and giving details of how you may be contacted.

2. A statement addressing each of the selection criteria. Consideration for interview is based upon your clear demonstration that you meet or would be able to meet all the selection criteria for the position.

3. A resume (or curriculum vitae) which provides:

- your relevant personal details, qualifications and work history;

- a concise description of your relevant work experience starting with the most recent and including dates;

- where relevant, a brief description of your duties and responsibilities in each job;

- your education and training achievements include any education you are currently undertaking;

- any activities you have undertaken outside of work or study (optional).

4. If applying for more than one position, a single application will suffice, however, please clearly indicate in your covering letter, which positions you are applying for.

Referees

Two referees must be nominated in your application, one of whom should be a current or recent supervisor. The other should also be equipped to provide information on your work performance. Applicants should only supply the details of referees that they are willing to have Council contact.

You should contact a referee for their approval, before listing them in your application. Provide the referee's name, work address, contact telephone number and your working and/or personal relationship with the referee. Reference checks by Council will be entirely confidential between the referee and Council.

Applications maybe mailed, hand delivered to Council's Office, 69 Green Street, Lockhart or submitted electronically. Faxed and e-mailed applications are acceptable only provided the hard copy is received within one week of the closing date. The fax number for applications is, (02) 6920 5247. All applications received will become the property of the Lockhart Shire Council and will not be returned to unsuccessful applicants. Applications must be of A4 paper size and clipped or stapled, not bound or in plastic document folders. Do not send original documents. Applications submitted on a computer disc will not be accepted. Retain a completed copy of your application for your own reference.

Closing Date Check the closing date for applications, to ensure that your application is received within the time specified.

Late applications will not be accepted.

THE SELECTION PROCEDURE

Once the closing date for a position has passed, Council will then consider applications it has received. There is no onus on Council to make a selection based on the applications received.

Council reserves the right to re advertise a position, re define the position description or cancel the original advertisement.

All applications will be treated confidentially by Council.

As part of the selection procedure Council may use various assessment tools to assist the recruiting process. Some examples include: - Interview, - Skills and aptitude testing, - Reference checks, - Documentation and related record checks, - Work performance record.

This list is not exhaustive and the combination used will be determined by the position.

Applicants for any position will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical examination at Council's expense.

According to the position applied for, applicants short listed for an interview or for the vacancy may be required to supply the following documentation, at Council's expense:- - Criminal record check, - Driving record PLEASE DO NOT PROCURE ANY DOCUMENTATION LISTED ABOVE OR ORGANISE A HEALTH ASSESSMENT WITHOUT THE EXPRESS INSTRUCTIONS OF COUNCIL. INTERVIEWS

In most cases, Council will conduct an interview, as part of the assessment process, with those applicants who are short-listed for the position.

Preparing For An Interview

All interview questions will be job related and will relate to the position you have applied for. The same questions will be asked of every applicant. To prepare yourself for the questions that maybe asked:

- Re-read the selection criteria;

- Focus on the selection criteria and think of examples of work and study situations where you applied the relevant skills and abilities.

Documentation which supports your application, which you have not already supplied to Council in your application, may be presented at the interview.

The Interview

There is no need to hire or buy special clothes but please dress neatly and appropriately.

Regard the interview as a discussion where you can learn more about the position and get to know your potential fellow workers. Do not regard it as a trial - relax.

Don't assume that the panel members know about your suitability for the job even though you may have worked with them or you have previous experience in the position you are applying for.

Take time to answer each question. A well thought-out answer presented clearly and concisely will be appreciated by the panel, even though you may take a few moments to put your thoughts together.

When the opportunity is presented, ask any questions you may have relevant to the position. Avoid asking questions just for the sake of it. If you do not have any questions then do not hesitate to say so.

The panel members will record your replies to the questions to assist them in making their final decision.

Interview Expenses

Prospective applicants should note that as a matter of Policy Lockhart Shire Council DOES NOT contribute towards the cost of attending employment interviews.
