Biography
Career: Premier Queensland 1968-87; Tres. 1983-87; Minister for Works and Housing 1963-68; MLA (NP) Barambah 1950-87; Nanango 1947-50. Bjelke-Petersen was thought by many to be a dictatorial leader as he stood his ground against often strong opposition. Amongst his many achievements were the abolition of death duties and the construction of the Wivenhoe Dam and Tarong Power Station. He was knighted in 1984 and lost the premiership in 1987 after the Fitzgerald inquiry into widespread police and political corruption in Queensland. He was tried for perjury after the inquiry, but the Crown chose not to proceed after the jury failed to reach a verdict in controversial circumstances.
