Lockhart Shire community has a strong national spirit and for a number of years now the majority of the planning and coordination of Australia Day activities are organised by local committees, with Council's financial assistance.

In 2009 Australia Day was hosted by the community of Tootool.

The Ambassador of Australia Day 2009 was Melissa Medlicott.  Melissa is a track and field athlete who has represented Australia eight times in sprint events.  She was the 100m champion in the Australian Grand Prix series in 1991 and ran both the 200m and the sprint relay at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

The day's festivities included rooster chase, catch the greasy pig, splat the rat, jumping castle, nail driving, classic cars display, brick throwing, horse & buggy rides, citizenship awards, best dressed Aussie male & female, SES display and various stalls.
